Fort McMurray 468 First Nation Invites Industry Into Its Next Chapter Of Growth

May 14 is the first conversation.

In recent years, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation has built one of Alberta’s most active Indigenous economic development portfolios. Strong industry and business partnerships generate millions of dollars that flow back into the community each year, funding programs, services, housing, member events, a community center, a health center, and on-reserve businesses such as A&W. This steady investment provides a strong foundation for the Nation for years to come.

Now comes the next chapter.

On Thursday, May 14, the Nation will host its 6th Reverse Trade Show in Calgary.  This year’s theme, “From Strong Foundations to New Horizons,” emphasizes the Nation’s strategic outlook.  Actively expanding its economic footprint, and diversifying growth into new sectors through strong partnerships.

“Over the next five years, our goal is to build a portfolio of assets and projects that generate stable, long-term revenue for generations to come. New Horizons means turning today’s partnerships into lasting ownership and opportunity for our Nation and our Members.”

— Ryan Coish, President, Business Development, FMFN468 Economic Development

The outlook spans real estate, renewable energy, gaming, hospitality, tourism, and oil and gas equity participation — sectors chosen to generate predictable, long-term revenue for future generations. For industry, it represents real opportunity.

A Different Kind of Trade Show

The format is intentional. This is a reverse trade show: the Nation and its network of partners set up booths and attendees come to them. It puts decision-makers from both sides of the table in the same room, and conversations happen naturally.

For procurement, business development, and project leads, the day is built to start partnership conversations face-to-face with FMFN468 leadership and their operating businesses.

Each year, the event draws around 300 attendees, including senior leaders from across the oil sands industry,  many of whom return repeatedly. For Coish, that repeat attendance is the proof: that partnerships create real value on both sides.

This year’s confirmed exhibitors span energy services, environmental, and operations sectors: SECURE Energy, PURE Environmental, Diversified, Breakwater Vantage, OCL Group, UNITED Safety, FLINT Corp., Civeo, OES 468 Heavy Rents, Integral Energy, Stantec, Alcor and Treeline Well Services. Construction, equipment, and specialty trades are represented by Morgan Construction, DXP, DFI Piling, Barnhart, Centerfire Contracting, SMS Equipment, STRAD, Arkon Solutions, Fort McKay Alcor, Pacific Rim, Trican, B&R, and Eckel’s.

Industry Panel: Where the Oil Sands Are Heading

A highlight of the event is the lunch panel from 12:15 to 12:45 PM featuring senior representatives from Canada’s largest oil sands producers and service providers. The discussion covers what’s on the horizon for oil sands development, how current investments are shaping the region, and the evolving role of Indigenous partnerships, with audience Q&A to follow.

It is a conversation worth showing up early for.
